- About This CD</H2>
-
- <P>
- The Info-Mac CD series began in 1992 here at Pacific HiTech. The concept was
- simple: provide on one CD-ROM hundreds of ready-to-run programs that would
- otherwise take a person dozens of hours to download and megabytes of hard disk
- space to get from the Internet. It proved to be a great idea and our CDs became
- very popular. Since then, the Internet has become faster and easier to access,
- and hard drive space is more available, but our philosophy is still sound. With the
- release of <B>Info-Mac XI</B>, we provide over a gigabyte of software for your
- enjoyment—software that would still take hours to download even at today's
- speeds. And it's all decompressed and ready to run right from the CD!
- </P>
-
- <P>
- All the items on <B>Info-Mac XI</B> are taken from the Info-Mac archive, the
- largest collection of Macintosh <A HREF="#anchor1612705">shareware</A>
- and freeware software on the Internet. Dozens of programs, utilities, graphics,
- information files and more are uploaded to this archive site weekly. Much of the
- software that can be found there is better than corresponding commercial
- programs, and is either free or at a fraction of the price. The archive is maintained
- on a voluntary basis and is hosted by MIT (although there is no official
- affiliation with the institution). If a program was written for the Mac, odds
- are it's on Info-Mac.
- </P>
-
- <P>
- Now, this disc does not contain every file found on Info-Mac, but everything that
- was uploaded since Info-Mac X CD was made. So you could actually collect
- just about every Macintosh <A HREF="#anchor1612705">shareware</A> and
- freeware program by purchasing all of Pacific HiTech's Info-Mac CDs from Vol. II
- to Vol. XI! For information about each of these CDs, including a complete listing
- of contents, please visit see our WWW site at
- <A HREF=" http://www.pht.com/mac/">http://www.pht.com/mac/</A>.
- </P>
-
- <P>
- Congratulations! <B>Info-Mac XI</B> is the latest in a fine family of products.
- Enjoy the CD!

- We have done everything possible to ensure this CD is a quality

- However, if you have a problem with the CD itself, or are
- dissatisfied with the product, please <A HREF="mailto:orders@pht.com">

- Each program has been launched to make sure it runs correctly and
- will not crash your computer. However, because computer
- configurations differ so widely, we cannot guarantee that every
- program on this disc will work for you. <FONT COLOR="#CC1111"><B>We do not provide support for
- the individual programs on the CD.</B></FONT> If you are experiencing problems with a
- particular program, consult the programs Read Me file, on-line help

- likely, your question can be answered by reading for five minutes. If
- not, you'll probably come accross the contact information provided by
- most authors.

- <H2>Interfaces</H2>
-
- <P>
- <IMG SRC="Read%20Me%20Graphics/Filemaker%20Icon" ALIGN=bottom>
- <B> FileMaker Pro</B> is possibly the most popular personal database
- program for the Macintosh. This CD contains our brand-new FileMaker Pro
- stand-alone interface. Whether you are experienced with FileMaker Pro, or
- are new to this program, just double-click this interface and you will instantly
- be at home. The interface features an intuitive, easy-to-use Mac-style
- layout with full program information, three views, find sort and print
- options, and a help screen. It will even show you where on the CD a program
- you are interested in is, and copy it to your hard drive for you! We have made it
- as easy as possible to find exactly the information you want!
- </P>
-
- <P>
- <IMG SRC="Read%20Me%20Graphics/Easy%20View%20Icon" ALIGN=bottom>
- <B> Easy View</B> is a program written by M. Akif Eyler that we also
- use as an interface to our discs. This setext-based interface allows you to quickly
- navigate through the entire disc by directory and find descriptions of any program.
- It is small and fast and allows you to do searches through a single directory. This
- is the ideal viewer if you are low on memory or are limited to a black and white
- monitor. The Easy View program is included on this CD in the Tool Chest folder.
- </P>
-
- <P>
- <IMG SRC="Read%20Me%20Graphics/BBEdit%20Icon" ALIGN=bottom>
- Finally, a <B>BBEdit</B> file is included for those users who want a simple,
- no-frills, text only listing of all the programs on the CD with their pathname and
- a short, one-line description. This gives only a minimal amount of information
- (compared to our other interfaces) but can be opened by any program that can
- read 'TEXT' files. This way, you can use your favorite editor to view and search
- the discs.

- The Tool Chest</H2>
-
-
- <P>
- Beginning with Info-Mac VI in August 1995, each of our Macintosh

- programs that are so indespensible that each and every Mac user
- should have them. In fact, you are probably using some of them right
- now! Wouldn't it be nice to have all these tools? That's where the
- <B>Tool Chest</B> comes in. On every Macintosh disc we'll include the
- best virus-protection, compression, viewing, editing and
- utility programs around. The <B>Tool Chest</B> on this CD includes:

- <H2>Frequently Asked/Answered Questions</H2>
-
- <P><B>Q: </B>When I double click a file, why does the computer tell
- me "The application for this file cannot be found?"</P>
-
- <P><B>A: </B>Some of the items that are found on the Internet are
- document files that are created by different programs. If you try to
- open a file that belongs to an application that you don't have, the
- computer will not be able to open it. Many times though, another
- program will be able to open the file. Look in the Tool Chest folder
- on this disc for various programs that can open graphics files, text
- files, sounds, and more.</P>
-
- <P><B>Q: </B>How do I use this great program I just found?</P>
-
- <P><B>A: </B>Included with virtually every progam is a "Read Me" or
- similar file(s), that will usually contain instructions as to how to
- use a program. Pacific HiTech cannot provide technical support on how
- to use individual programs.</P>
-
- <P><B>Q: </B>Why does my computer crash when I try to run a
- particular program?</P>
-
- <P><B>A: </B>While we test every program on all of our CDs, we cannot
- guarantee each program will work on every Macintosh model. Check the
- documentation for known incompatibilities. If none are mentioned and
- you would still like to use the program, contact the author with your
- problem via email or regular mail (these addresses are usually
- included in the documentation).</P>
-
- <P><B>Q: </B>I thought I had a pretty fast computer, why is this
- program running so slow?</P>
-
- <P><B>A: </B>Even newer CD drives are quite slow compared to the
- speed of a hard drive. If you are running a program directly from the
- CD, it may appear to be very slow because of this. Move the program
- to your hard drive and run it from there.</P>
-
- <P><B>Q: </B>How do I install a program from the CD to my hard drive?
- </P>
-
- <P><B>A</B>: To move a program to your hard drive, simply drag the
- folder containing the program and its files (or just the program if
- there isn;t a folder) to your hard drive. Some programs are included
- on the CD as an "Installer." Just double-click such icons and the
- program will be installed on your hard drive.</P>
-
- <P><B>Q: </B>Do I have to copy programs to my hard drive to be able
- to use them?</P>
-
- <P><B>A: </B>95% of the time, no--you can run them right from the
- CD. There are a few exceptions where programs expect to modify
- themsleves, but this is something that Apple recommends against. Since a
- CD cannot be written to you must copy the program to your hard drive
- (see above) in these cases.</P>
-
- <P><B>Q: </B>Can I use System 6.x with this CD?</P>
-
- <P><B>A: </B>Unfortunately, this CD does not support System 6.x or
- earlier. We recommend you update your System to at least 7.0.1, which
- is freely available on the Internet from
- <A HREF="http://www.info.apple.com/">Apple</A>.</P>
-
- <P><B>Q: </B>Why can't I save changes to files on the CD?</P>
-
- <P><B>A: </B>A CD-ROM (<B>R</B>ead-<B>O</B>nly <B>M</B>emory) is
- desgined to hold a great deal of information cheaply, but the
- drawback is that changes cannot be made to the files on the disc.
- <I>Nothing</I> can be written to the CD! If something you are doing
- is trying to write to the CD, the only thing you can do is to copy
- the program or file to your hard drive (see above).</P>
-
- <P><B>Q: </B>Do you have any more great Macintosh CDs and how can I
- get them?</P>
-
- <P><B>A: </B>I'm so glad you asked! We carry a wide range of
- Macintosh CDs covering Internet software, reference materials,
- royalty free clip art, high resolution paper textures, and much more!

- <H2>A Note About Shareware Programs</H2>
-
- <P>Many of the programs on this CD-ROM are freeware or shareware, and
- may have restrictions and obligations regarding their use. Although
- freeware, as the name implies, involves no fee, there may be
- copyright restrictions as specified in the documentation of the
- program. Shareware, however, generally can be used on a trial basis
- after which you must pay the author a specified amount if you decide
- to continue using the program. By so registering with the author, you
- will often receive the latest version of the program as well as
- current documentation. Please read through an individual program's
- documentation for specific details about the use of that program.

-
- <P>We at Pacific HiTech, Inc. have gone through every program
- included on the CD-ROM to check for copyright and distribution
- restrictions, and have done our best to include only unrestricted
- files, or files whose authors have given us express permission to do
